Day 7: Volcanoes National Park

This morning after an early (and probably a quite excited) breakfast, you will be transferred to the headquarters of the Parc National des Volcans where you will be divided into groups according to your fitness levels and be introduced to your head guides.

After a briefing and introduction, you will begin your journey to find these beautiful animals while the sounds, smells and sights of the park fills your senses!

It is advisable to discuss your fitness levels with your guide on the transfer to the headquarters so he is clear about how fit you are. We also recommend you hire a porter to assist you with your climb and to carry your bags. You may find you are quite capable without the porter, but it’s always nice to have strong hands to help you down the sometimes steep and slippery slopes, and your contribution makes a very welcome difference to their lives. Many of them are ex-poachers and the US$ 10 per person charge supports both the local community and gorilla conservation.

Gorilla treks take place in the morning and depart from the Park Headquarters at around 07:30am. Prior to departure you are given a briefing by park staff, assigned a gorilla family to visit and rangers to guide you. The treks take place on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes and clients should be in good physical condition as some of the trek can be physically demanding. The treks normally start in the cultivated land on the base of the volcanoes and then you are guided up into the beautiful dense misty forests. The trek normally lasts between 2 and 5 hours depending on the location of the gorilla family and a maximum of eight visitors is allowed per gorilla family. Once you reach the gorillas you are permitted to stay for one hour to view them.

After this memorable experience, you will return to the lodge for lunch and a well-deserved rest. The afternoon will be at leisure.

Activities and Services

Breakfast, lunch and dinner at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge.

Day 8: Volcanoes National Park

After another early start (these adventure trips are not for the fainthearted!), you will go on a trek to see the Golden Monkeys. These are delightful little primates that you can get quite close to as they leap around the trees. You will be back in time for lunch and an afternoon at leisure; the trek is generally much easier than that for the gorillas.

If you are feeling energetic you can take a boat trip on nearby Lake Ruhondo which is a great fun trip where you get to see the little villages, do a bit of birding and appreciate the beauty of this Virunga area. This will be at an additional cost and you can chat to Andrew about arranging the trip.

Activities and Services

Breakfast, lunch and dinner at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge.

Day 9: End of Itinerary

Your final morning in the Virungas. You can do another gorilla trek (subject to availability and now US$ 1500 per person), or you can walk to Dian Fossey's Grave (it’s about a five hour trek).

After lunch you will set off back to Kigali. You can have an early supper before being taken to the airport in time for your flight back home.
